SUMMARY:June 2021 Online Forum: Turning ocean waves into electricity
DESCRIPTION:Dr Burke Hales\, Professor OSU\, College of Earth\, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences\, gave a truly fascinating talk about PacWave\, and the challenges and opportunities of tapping ocean waves for renewable energy.  \nThe PacWave project\, to be built off the Oregon coast near Newport\, will facilitate and speed up the development of new technology to harness the motion of ocean waves to generate electricity. Prototype wave converters must be tested under real conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy is spending 80 million dollars to construct the PacWave test facility 7 miles off the coast of Newport. It will involve a 2-square mile patch of ocean that will include four berths where prototype wave converters can be installed and connected to buried cables carrying electricity onshore. Our speaker\, Dr. Hales\, is Chief Scientist of the testing facility and will explain how this technology could someday provide a major source of clean energy for our region.

SUMMARY:May 2021 Online Forum: Transitioning to Electric Landscaping Equipment
DESCRIPTION:Dan Mabe\, Founder and President of American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA)\, gave a wonderful talk about how we can transition from gas powered landscaping equipment to electric powered equipment which helps to reduce air and noise pollution. \nDan grew up in a landscaping family and in 2006 he created an all electric landscaping business which grew to 70 customers in one year. He started AGZA in 2010 to help prudently transition the landscape maintenance industry to cleaner and quieter technologies and operation. AGZA’s efforts have resulted in the creation of green collar jobs\, improved health of workers and communities\, and greatly reducing environmental impacts. \nDan discussed the air and noise pollution issues with gas powered equipment\, the electric equipment that is currently available\, the cost comparison between gas and electric and the return on investment. He discussed what other communities with similar seasons are doing in regard to transitioning to electric. He also spoke about what we can do to help business owners transition to electric equipment. \n\nTo learn more about our speaker and American Green Zone Alliance please visit agza.net.\nClick here for a list of landscape companies offering all-electric service in Lake Oswego.

SUMMARY:April 2021 Online Forum: The Soil Will Save Us
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Ohlson\, author of The Soil Will Save Us\, presented her  case for “our great green hope” – a way in which we can heal the land\, turn atmospheric carbon into beneficial soil carbon\, and potentially reverse global warming – through regenerative agricultural and landscaping practices.  \nIn her talk\, Ohlson introduced some of the visionaries from her beautifully researched book. She shared stories from scientists\, farmers\, ranchers\, and landscapers—who are figuring out in the lab and on the ground how to build healthy soil including the herd of microorganisms that escape our notice. Better land management practices\, that lead to healthy soils\, can help solve a myriad of problem: including drought\, erosion\, air and water pollution\, and food quality\, as well as climate change. \nOhlson’s presentation was eye-opening and inspiring. The program concluded with a lively set of questions and answers as well as ideas of what we can do next.

SUMMARY:March 2021 Online Forum: Hydrogen as a Conveyor of Zero Carbon Energy
DESCRIPTION:Ken Dragoon\, Director of Hydrogen Development for Obsidian Renewables\, gave a fascinating talk about hydrogen and the promising future this technology holds for the future. Hydrogen can be an important component in reaching zero carbon energy because the excess energy produced by renewables such as solar and wind can be turned into hydrogen gas by using electricity to break apart water molecules. \nWhen you need power\, you can turn the hydrogen back into electricity with a fuel cell. Or if you would rather\, you can burn it to make steel or cement or you can combine it with nitrogen from the air and make fertilizer. When you use hydrogen as a fuel\, the only residue is good old H2O.

SUMMARY:LO Reads 2021 - Sustainability & Equity Event: Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:LOSN teamed up with the LO Reads 2021 program to present a program about Social Justice. Have you ever wondered why communities of color disproportionately affected by toxins\, poor air and water quality? \nCome hear Victoria Paykar\, Oregon Transportation Policy Manager of Climate Solutions talk about the history of environmental justice\, its importance\, and what is happening now in Oregon. She brings a wealth of experience to this topic with her work on programs and policies to deliver equitable climate benefits to low-income and communities of color.
